February E-Advocacy: Fight the Ban

Same tune, different lyrics. Oppose Unjust Refugee and Immigration Ban.

Refugee shabbat no wordsThe United States turned its back on thousands of Jewish refugees during WWII because some Members of Congress argued there might be spies who would threaten our national security among the Jews fleeing Nazi occupied Europe.

The new President is singing the same tune โ€“ he just tweaked the lyrics, substituting โ€œMuslimsโ€ for โ€œJewsโ€; โ€œterroristsโ€ for โ€œspies;” and specific Muslim-majority countries, โ€œSyria, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen,” for โ€œEurope.”

The Torah commands us 36 times to welcome strangers. As Jews, we have an ethical obligation to take action to stop a ban that is unconstitutional, illegal, and immoral.

Rabbi Hillelโ€™s teaching spurs us to action: If not us, then who? If not now, then when? Send an email to President Trump and urge him to rescind his hateful executive order.
